Tamaani rolls out faster Internet speeds for Kuujjuaq users
Other Nunavik communities should see upgrades by April 2012
Faster Internet — about three times more speedy — is on its way to Kuujjuaq.
Kuujjuaq will be the first Nunavik community to sign on to improved Internet access since Broadband Canada launched a project with local provider Tamaani to offer Internet speeds three times faster than before.
Kuujjuammiut can now upgrade to plans that will increase reliability, accelerate traffic and cache the most commonly-visited web pages, making them more quickly available to users, said a Feb. 22 news release from the Kativik Regional Government.
Starting at $60 per month, users in Kuujjuaq can now subscribe to Tamaani’s new plans, which offer Internet download speeds of 512Kbps (kilobits per second), upload speeds of 128Kpbs and monthly limits of 10GB.
One of the features of the new plans is a change in usage limit.
That will be calculated on a monthly rather than daily basis, to give users more flexibility over how they want to use their bandwidth.
The upgrades, funded through the Industry Canada program Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians, are targeted at communities where Internet congestion is heaviest.
Following Kuujjuaq, Nunavik’s larger communities like Puvirnituq, Inukjuak and Salluit will receive network adjustments.
The rest of Nunavik should receive upgraded services by the end of March 2012.
The upgrades are also paid for by grants from the Quebec government, Telesat Canada and the KRG..
