Members of Nunavik’s co-operative network are still in shock over the theft of $2,500 from its credit union branch in Kuujjuaq earlier this week.
Thieves broke down the door to the credit union late April 15, said Lisa Koperqualuk, senior communications manager for the Fédération des Co-opératives du Nouveau-Quebec.
Before the thieves left, they gathered $2,500 to take with them, she said.
Koperqualuk called the robbery senseless, because the co-operative movement is based on using money collectively for the good of all.
So, when money is taken, it’s taken from everyone, and “it’s hurtful to everyone,” she said.
The Kativik Regional Police Force is now investigating the break-in and robbery.
Video cameras outside the office were not working at time.
Koperqualuk urged anyone who knows anything about the robbery to either call her, at 514-457-9371, or the KRPF.
The KRPF said it is “seeking suspects in this matter and if anyone has any information they should contact the police of Kuujjuaq at 819-964-9111.”
Since 2007, the FCNQ, in partnership with Quebec’s powerful Desjardins credit union, has introduced trilingual, web-based banking services to Nunavik communities through their local co-operative associations.
