A 29-year-old Iqaluit man is now recovering after suffering near-fatal stab wounds in an alcohol-fueled incident March 26 at housing unit 415B.

The man, who has not been identified by police, is now off life-support and is in critical but stable condition at Ottawa Civic Hospital, police said.

RCMP Sgt. Jimmy Akavak said police received a call reporting the incident at around 9:45 p.m., March 26.

Reviewing the incident report, Akavak said the caller sounded “frantic.” The call came from 415B.

When police arrived, they found that someone had been stabbed and then called for an ambulance.

Akavak would not say how many people were there, because if any charges are laid, the other people might be required to serve as witnesses.

“It was a bit of a party going on,” Akavak said.

The victim received emergency surgery at Qikiqtani General Hospital and was then medevaced to Ottawa for more treatment.

Jayco Kilabuk, 28, is charged with attempted murder and has been remanded into custody.

Kilabuk was to have appeared in court March 31 in Iqaluit.
