Young man, 18, faces 12 charges arising from day of booze-fueled mayhem

A Cape Dorset man appeared Aug. 4 for a first court appearance in connection with a dangerous incident in Cape Dorset on July 28 in a which a firearm was fired in the direction of a group of children.

Qavavau Shaa, 18, appeared before a justice of the peace in Iqaluit Aug. 4.

His case was moved to the Nunavut Court of Justice because of the serious nature of the charges against him.

Shaa’s most serious charges are two counts of discharging a firearm with intent to cause harm, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of four years upon conviction.

The other charges include three breaches of conditions, one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of careless discharge of a firearm and three counts of pointing a firearm.

He also faces an unrelated charge of uttering threats.

Shaa faces his next court appearance — his first before the Nunavut Court of Justice — on Aug. 10.
