Abraham Nakoolak of Rankin Inlet faces a charge of manslaughter following the sudden death Aug. 14 of Douglas James “DJ” Gamble, 23, also of Rankin Inlet.

“DJ” Gamble is the son of John and Angela Gamble of Rankin Inlet, operators of the well-known Red Top Variety Shop.

Police found Gamble, suffering from apparent stab wounds, at around 2:30 a.m. Aug. 14 on the steps of a house in Rankin Inlet.

He died soon after at the community health centre.

The Nunavut coroner’s office has ordered an autopsy, and police are continuing their investigation.

A source said Gamble may have attended a party earlier that night and may have been involved in a dispute with another person or persons.

The RCMP urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident that led to Gamble’s death to call the Rankin Inlet detachment at (867) 979-0123 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Nunavut has now suffered 42 confirmed homicides since April 1, 1999, including four since January 2010.
