The Makivik Corp. board member for Quaqtaq, Lizzie Kulula, will appear in court early next year to face charges of drug trafficking in connection with a seizure carried out this week in Quaqtaq.

Police with the Kativik Regional Police Force say they started their investigation in Quaqtaq after an informant told them that two women and a man were selling marijuana and cocaine in the community.

During the investigation, police discovered that the women and the man had travelled to Montreal and planned to return during the first week of October.

Police obtained a search warrant, signed by a justice of the peace, for their luggage, which remained valid from Oct. 1 to Oct. 5.

Police in Quaqtaq executed a search for alcohol and drugs at the airport Oct. 5, finding a 750-ml bottle of Baileys, a 750-ml bottle of wine, and a 325-ml bottle of Amarula in the luggage.

Police also found a grey metallic thermos, partially stuffed with marijuana. While removing the marijuana, they discovered a bag containing half a gram of cocaine was also in the thermos.

In the luggage, police also found a plastic bag with one gram of marijuana and a brown envelope with six $100 bills and three $50 bills. Police discovered about a third of a gram of cocaine in another bag.

In all, police seized 25.1 grams of marijuana and .8 gram of cocaine.

Piari St-Cyr, 20, and his mother Lizzie Kulula, 49, have been charged with possession of drugs with the intent to trafficking in connection with the Oct. 5 seizure. They were released with a promise to appear in court Jan. 14, 2009.

Kulula is also the deputy mayor of Quaqtaq and an Air Inuit board member.
