A managment theory for Nunavut
In the work place, and the legislature is no exception, there are two kinds of management: boss management, the “I know best, do as I say” model and lead management, the “let’s see how we can arrive at what’s best for us all” model.
Our new territorial government has a golden opportunity to lead manage the new territory. Hunters have long known that working together and listening to each other is essential. The elected members of the legislative assembly are for the most part closely related by blood to their constituents, and even in some cases to each other.
The Nunavut territory has been born in an age where lead management has been identified and is taught in management courses, unlike the other provinces and territories in Canada, which were formed when boss management was the only leadership model in existence.
On the issue of time zones, I believe that the government should set a lead management precedent and first impose a moratorium on the issue. Secondly, I believe that the government should hold a plebiscite on the issue and allow all constituents of Nunavut to have input.
I hope that the Nunavut government will see fit to lead manage the territory and so encourage harmony and empowerment in its people.
