There are 13 new COVID-19 cases reported in Nunavik between Saturday and Monday, says the region’s regional health board.
Monday’s numbers represent the first time active cases in the region have fallen below 50 since October, when the outbreak began, according to the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services. The total now sits at 45.
Public health measures that limit gatherings and mandate the closure of non-essential services remain in effect in most communities. Last week, restrictions eased in Kuujjuaraapik after the community hit a 70 per cent vaccination rate. There, restaurants and bars are allowed to reopen, and gatherings are allowed of up to 50 people indoors and 250 outdoors.
The board released its bi-weekly case breakdown on Dec. 3. Of the region’s 913 cases reported between Oct. 7 and Dec. 1, 54 per cent of people who tested positive were adults, 18 and older. Of the total positive cases, 80 per cent of them were people who were not “adequately vaccinated,” with at least two doses.
The health board has teamed up with the Red Cross in the region’s mission to vaccinate all eligible children by Christmas. The region’s “vaccine blitz” continues for adults and children in municipalities across the region until Dec. 19.
