An Iqaluit man facing a slew of charges in connection to a December shootout remains in hospital but is expected to appear in court to face those charges next month.

Jerry Issuqangituq was charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, counts of discharging a weapon and assault with a weapon after it’s alleged he opened fire on police and passing vehicles on Dec. 22 in Iqaluit’s Happy Valley neighbourhood.

That prompted a three-hour standoff, which ended when Issuqangituq was seriously injured by a gunshot wound.

Police have not said how Issuqangituq was injured, but the Ottawa Police Service have since taken over the investigation of the incident.

Following the shooting, Issuqangituq was medevaced to an Ottawa hospital where he was put in a medically induced coma.

He has since come out of the coma, had surgery and continues to recover in hospital, lawyers told a judge at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit on Monday, May 6.

But Issuqangituq has not recovered to the extent that he can consult with his own lawyer.

The accused now faces a series of new charges, including attempted murder, discharging a weapon and breaking conditions. Issuqangituq is now scheduled to make his first appearance on a total of 27 charges on Tuesday, June 4, by telephone.
