Arrest made in Kangirsuk ‘community emergency’
Nunavik Police Service announces arrest after reports of an armed man shooting a rifle in the community
Police in Kangirsuk say they made an arrest Saturday afternoon after telling people to stay indoors because of reports an armed man had been firing a rifle within the community.
Around 2 p.m., the Nunavik Police Service announced on Facebook that the “community emergency in Kangirsuk is over.”
No injuries were reported, police said.
Late Saturday morning, police urged people in to stay indoors because of reports that a man armed with a rifle in the village of approximately 560 people on the Ungava peninsula coast about 230 kilometres north of Kuujjuaq.
The Nunavik Police Service issued an alert late Saturday morning. It was posted on the police service’s Facebook page and was reposted by the Kativik Regional Government on its Facebook page.
Police called for people to use “extreme” caution and to avoid anyone who appears to be openly carrying a rifle.
The NPS said it would let the public know when the emergency is resolved and it is safe for residents to go outside.
