Arviat is again looking for a new councillor after seeing two resignations since the start of the year.
Coun. Mike Gibbons resigned Jan. 8 due to health reasons, Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said Friday in an email.
Alex Ishalook resigned March 8 for personal reasons.
Hamlet council replaced Gibbons on Jan. 9 with Darren Price, the runner-up in October’s municipal election. Price garnered 100 votes in that election, just missing out on winning a seat by 10 votes.
With no more candidates available from the last election, Arviat issued a call-out on social media Wednesday seeking residents interested in filling the vacant seat.
The hamlet is asking candidates to submit their “expression of interest” to P.O Box 150, Arviat, Nunavut, X0C 0E0, in person to the hamlet office, or via email to sao@arviat.ca.
The submission deadline is 5 p.m. on March 25.
You mean communities can simply appoint the runner-up to council if a vacancy occurs shortly after an election… who knew?
And apparently it can be done in one day so that council can be full and not waste precious time. Maybe Iqaluit needs to learn something about efficiency from Arviat.
Hey Lewis MacKay put your name forward!
Plus it’s a dry town
Supposed to be dry.
