Nunavut’s new polar bear licence plates have been unveiled.

Community Services Minister David Akeeagok held up the new design Tuesday during meetings with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. at the Aqsarniit hotel in Iqaluit, a moment captured in a photo posted to Premier P.J. Akeeagok’s social media.

The plate is shaped like a polar bear with a blue and yellow outline and red inuksuk placed in the middle.

“The new design reflects the public feedback to bring back the bear-shaped plates,” said Kathryn Devereaux, spokesperson for the Department of Community Services.

The official rollout will be “early summer,” she said, adding that a news release with more information is to be released Friday.

Each registered vehicle will be eligible for a new plate, according to a list of frequently asked questions Devereaux provided.

People will be able to keep their old plates, but the new plates must be attached to the rear of their vehicles. That includes passenger vehicles, ATVs, trailers and heavy equipment.

The polar bear plate’s return was announced last year by Minister Akeeagok, who said it was a celebration of Nunavut’s 25th anniversary.

The Government of Nunavut and the N.W.T. government, which holds the copyright of the bear-shaped plate, reached an agreement to allow Nunavut to create its own.

The original polar bear plate, which had a plain blue and white design, was in use when Nunavut split from the Northwest Territories in 1999.

Nunavut’s current rectangular plates, which illustrate a polar bear in front of northern lights, came into use in 2012.

The complete absence of any leadership anywhere have me longing for the good olden days when we use to have more options. We have picture boy with no substance and then for the Inuit side we have nothing, just a let me know what to do boy!

NWT, NWT and enough of None Of It!

This is a three legged bear. Do you know Polar bear have four legs? Nice to have it back but I think four legged bear should be returned to Nunavut

Twenty-five years of inaction have taken a profound toll, exacerbated by a leader who appears to prioritize capture and international travel as primary responsibilities. The next step is the ITK President election. The days of being part of the Northwest Territories are long gone; it was a promising start, spearheaded by diligent individuals, but unfortunately, it did not yield the desired outcome. Nevertheless, their efforts are appreciated. The current state of affairs is a reality that we must acknowledge.

Those are ugly! Why not make a plate that shapes like a seal?

we get it, nunavuts colours are red yellow and blue. but all three dont need to be on everything. loose the yellow and the inukshuk. go black with the outline and the embossing and made the embossing bigger. who votes on this stuff? or is it just a photo op and “thats good enough, lets move on?” which seems to be our whole government

Honestly, this is a massive downgrade. It looks like something you’d buy at an airport gift store.

Look at what the NWT did with their polar bear plate. Why couldn’t Nunavut have adapted the design on the current plate to work on the polar bear plate?

Also would blend in perfectly on a cheap Chinese knockoff store like Temu, AliExpress, or Wish.

Need more younger ideas. I live with elderly parents with many relatives they are no help. No use to my life. No jobs, just a bunch of huge families is no use. Having elderly parents they’re just doing nothing. Waste of time

Thomas, your message is clear. People must have PURPOSE in their life. A reason for getting up and facing the challenges of the day. To make their lives, and the lives of their loved ones and their community better. Without purpose, people steadily descend into a meaningless, despondent and unhappy life of dependence. Make it your goal to have purposeful, meaningful and happy life.

One interesting detail… Looks like the plate doesn’t have two holes on the bottom for screws, only two for the top. NWT’s bear plate has 4 holes total… Will Nunavut be the only licence plate in Canada with 2 holes?

Personally, I would of still used the background of the current plate, instead of plain white background.

100% agree. The new plate would look much better if it retained the existing background

Well that just isn’t true. Go in and try to get a license plate. They’ll tell you the truth. There aren’t any license plates at all…old ones, new ones, nothing. You can’t register a new car unless you find your own plate. The new ones won’t be in until late August.
