Break-in, theft a costly setback for Iqaluit air cadets
Start of fall program delayed; RCMP warn of ‘multiple’ break-ins recently across the city
Iqaluit air cadets ready to start their fall season have been forced to stand down, after a break-in at the cadet hall caused an estimated $30,000 damage last month.
“As of now, the start of the cadet program will be postponed until the damages have been fixed, equipment replaced and the building secured,” Sharif Ibrahim, general manager of Royal Canadian Legion branch 168, said in an email to Nunatsiaq News.
The incident at the cadet hall on Mivvik Street was reported to RCMP and announced through social media on Aug. 27, he added.
That post, on the cadets’ Facebook page, said that in addition to damage done to the property a wall-mounted TV and computer were also stolen, and indicated there had been at least one previous recent break-in.
Returning and new members of the 795 Iqaluit Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron had been scheduled to muster on Sept. 3.
“We cannot at this time commit to a firm start date as we do not have a timeline for completion,” said Ibrahim.
In a news release issued Wednesday night, Iqaluit RCMP said officers have “responded to multiple break-and-enters” recently in various parts of the city.
The release said there has been “significant property damage and loss of merchandise to local merchants” as a result of the break-ins.
Ibrahim said the cost of the damage and property stolen from the cadet hall hasn’t been totalled.
“We are still in the process of obtaining quotes,” he said.
He advised cadet families to watch for public service announcements for updates on the squadron’s delayed fall programming.
Iqaluit is out of control!
With the limited resources available, it only will get worse. More drugs, more alcohol, more drinking under the influence, more break-and-enter, more violence, more weapons, more sexual assaults, and eventually more casualties.
Iqaluit is growing substantially, with no, or not enough housing.
How will this end? What can be done to mitigate the growing catastrophic situation?
Iqaluit has become a dangerous city and residents should be able to feel save.
What can be done? Vote Conservative and cut the crime.
Absolutly no positive impact on the local crime, if he is elected. Less money for our territory who is surviving on canadians taxpayers, more struggling citizens, more poverty and more crime. The actuals politicians are bad, this guy is worst. I understand why people down south will vote for him, but if you live in Nunavut… He simple dont care about us. Beside, those who hate minorities vote for him.
