People in Rankin Inlet are being told to boil their water thanks to a leak in the hamlet’s water system.
The Department of Health issued the precautionary advisory Tuesday, after a water pipe broke Monday evening.
Workers with the Department of Community and Government Services have reduced water pressure through the system in order to investigate where the break occurred.
“Once the break has been located, the broken section of the pipe will be isolated and repaired,” said Greg Belanger, a spoksperson for Community and Government Services, in an email.
“The boil water advisory has been issued as a result of the break, the water treatment plant is functioning normally.”
The drop in pressure can create a risk of backflow, or infiltration, where contaminants like bacteria or other pathogens can enter the pipes through cracks or breaks, said Chelsea Halvorson, spokesperson for the Department of Health, in an email.
The advisory will remain in effect “until the leak is repaired, pressure is restored, and water quality testing confirms the water is safe to drink,” said Halvorson.
Neither the Health nor Community and Government Services departments said when the advisory is expected to end.
