Iqaluit celebrated the arrival of the new year with its annual candy toss event.

A brand new qamutik was one of the various prizes available to participants. Whoever caught a specially tagged candy could claim their prize from an event co-ordinator.

it’s not just a candy toss. It’s Inuit tradition parlak to celebrate family members first catch to show how proud we are of them. For myself my two grandsons had their first caribou so we had our grandson throw candy bags, some in them with money, note for the winner that they got a TV, beaver skin, trapper hat. These were to show gratitude. It’s a proud moment and exciting to start the new year by giving.
