Co-workers support Mary Mesher
As residents of the community of Kuujjuaq, we would like to take this opportuity to support an individual who is dedicating her professional life to the pursuit of culturally sensitive programs for children and families on the Ungava Coast.
The person of whom we are speaking is Mary Mesher, the co-ordinator of the Saturvik Group Home.
Mary is a very competent manager who has studied under the Unversity of British Columbia and the McGill University social service programs. Mary is a traditional woman and leader who values the strengths of her Inuit staff and who seeks to provide them with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Mary’s leadership skills were highlighted during a crisis that took place at the group home in the early part of 1999. For example, Mary was and continues to be instrumental in ensuring that families and children involved in her program receive the attention they deserve. In addition, Mary secured support for her staff, who were also deeply affected by this crisis.
Unfortunately, requests by Mary for support for herself seem to have been unheard and continue to be unheard.
Mary is a woman who has a strong sense of family and community. She is concerned about the future of her people and the erosion of Inuit culture and traditions. Mary is very outspoken about the JBNQA and its application to Nunavik. Mary has attempted to highlight the lack of support for the agreement in the field of health and social services.
This activity appears to have angered certain individuals. Mary was recently suspended from her job. This is not acceptable.
We would like to commend Mary in her pursuit of fairness and cultural equality. We know it is very difficult and lonely at times to stand up for what is right. We hope that others throughout the region feel safe enough to come forward with their support.
In the spirit of empowerment.
