Work continues as Clyde River’s new small craft harbour begins to take shape.
Work started early this summer, and on Monday heavy equipment could be seen building up the breakwater, unloading boulders and moving earth.
In June 2022, the federal government awarded the nearly $38-million contract to build the harbour to Pilitak Enterprises Ltd. of Iqaluit.
In an announcement last year, the government said work will include a fixed wharf, floating wharf, sealift ramp and a community launch ramp.
It’s expected the small craft harbour in Clyde River will be completed in 2026.
In 2008, a Senate report called on the federal government to build small craft harbours in Nunavut to bolster arctic sovereignty.
Over the past decade, the government has funded projects in several Nunavut communities: Pangnirtung’s harbour was built in 2013 and Pond Inlet’s small craft harbour opened in 2021.
More recently, Iqaluit’s deepsea port and its own small craft harbour opened this past summer.
Thank you federal government and GN, I have been noticing more infrastructure being built in Nunavut over the last couple years, Covid slowed things down for a bit but man, more things being built in Nunavut.
