A single-family home in Rankin Inlet burned to the ground on Wednesday evening.
An adult couple who lived in the home for 25 years were not injured, fire Chief Mark Wyatt said Thursday.
No one was injured, he said, “it was close, but we got everybody out.”
The hamlet’s fire department was called to the home at around 9:40 p.m. Eleven firefighters battled the blaze well into Thursday morning, finally returning to the fire station at approximately 3 a.m.
“It’s a total writeoff,” Wyatt said, adding firefighters returned twice Thursday to deal with potential hot spots.
He said it “was not a suspicious fire at all,” but an investigation is ongoing.
Wyatt estimated the total value of the property lost at $450,000, but noted the residents were art collectors and losses from the home and contents could wind up being much higher.
