3 overnight fires in Cambridge Bay under investigation

‘Suspicion they might be’ connected but no evidence yet, says fire chief

Fire officials in Cambridge Bay are investigating three fires that occurred overnight in the community.

“We have no evidence at the moment that I could say that they were connected,” said Cambridge Bay fire Chief Keith Morrison.

“But given that they occurred in the same area at the same time, there’s a suspicion that they might be.”

The first fire — a shed — was reported at 1:30 a.m. and put out by a resident with a fire extinguisher, Morrison said.

Then, at 4:30 a.m., the fire department received reports of a fire in an unoccupied public housing single-family home at 5 Okalik St., near the Canadian High Arctic Research Station.

While fighting that fire, crews discovered a second shed fire, which was extinguished by a hamlet water truck, Morrison said.

No injuries were reported in the blazes.

The house was later demolished as it had been “structurally compromised” by the fire, Morrison said.

The fire crew cleared the scene at around 8:20 a.m.

The Cambridge Bay Fire Department thanked the community on its Facebook Page for helping to fight the fires.

“Anyone having information regarding the fire at 5 Okalik or the two shed fires that were also deliberately set last night is asked to contact the RCMP or the fire department,” the post said.

Need enforceable curfews for kids in all Nunavut communities. This is getting out of hand.

We all know it was arson and we all know who started them. Something has to be done about these dumb*** kids, no parental guidance and poor parenting skills. The entire town is sick of these kids

And if you KNOW, who it was, I would assume you have gone to the RCMP with the information. Or is it just expanded gossip?

What is their MLA doing for these young kids that keep being posted about on their local town page? What has she done for their community to work with the youth initiatives? What is she doing for their community to steer them in a healthy direction? Nothing.

Clearly not an MLA blaming issue. Very clearly an issue with parenting. We see everyday now that children having children with no compassion, being left alone with their abusers then failing in each attempt to push forward after being retold they cannot succeed by their own parents!

where are the police patrols?? shouldn’t they be preventing things like this??

Answer the first question!! Where are the lazy assed parents? Certainly not watching the results of their moment of sexual satisfaction. Drinking drugging, smoking up, watching tv, not working. Don’t expect the police or bylaw to be parents for your undisciplined kids.
