Former mayor Kupapik Ningeocheak says he stepped down from Coral Harbour’s mayoral seat late last year after a sudden death in his family.

Nunatsiaq News previously reported on the vacancy but was unable to reach anybody in the hamlet to explain why Ningeocheak had resigned.

Ningeocheak shared his resignation letter this week, but did not offer further comment.

In the letter, dated Dec. 20, he said that after the sudden death of his only brother, he could not continue his leadership.

He thanked the people of Coral Harbour for their support during his “short time” in office.

Ningeocheak was acclaimed as mayor in October’s municipal election.

Now, a four-candidate race is underway to replace him.

Aidan Saviakjuk, Lenny Emiktaut, Patterk Netser and Willie Nakoolak are on the ballot for a byelection scheduled for April 15.

Advance voting is scheduled to take place April 8 from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Coral Harbour hamlet office. Voters who will be away from the hamlet can request a mail-in ballot from Elections Nunavut.
