An early morning fire Sunday was quickly brought under control by Iqaluit firefighters, a City of Iqaluit spokesperson says.
Dispatchers received the report of a fire at building 2125 in the Tundra Ridge neighbourhood near Joamie School at 4:34 a.m. When fire crews arrived about three minutes later, smoke was coming from a third-floor window of the multi-unit building, city spokesperson Geoff Byrne said in an email Monday.
Two firefighters entered the unit and the fire was brought under control by 4:50 a.m.
“The fire was contained to one unit. All other residents were cleared to return to their homes. No injuries were reported,” Byrne said.
Seventeen full-time firefighters and three command staff attended, he said, and municipal enforcement and RCMP provided scene support. The Iqaluit Housing Authority assisted in securing the unit.
Byrne said the Iqaluit fire department is assisting the RCMP with its investigation. A spokesperson for Iqaluit RCMP was not immediately available Monday afternoon.
