Environment Canada is warning of higher-than-normal tide waters Friday morning in Iqaluit and the surrounding Frobisher Bay area.

A storm surge alert was issued late Thursday afternoon, saying that conditions are expected to last between 8 a.m. and noon, and improve by the evening.

A combination of high tide and strong winds will cause water levels to rise above normal tide levels along and near the headwaters of Frobisher Bay, the alert says. Boats anchored near the beach are at risk.

People with basements are advised to elevate and relocate important items to their main floors due to possible flooding.

The combination of surge and waves may cause damage along the coast, the alert says.

Friday’s forecast is calling for a mix of rain and snow, with temperatures reaching 3 C and winds up to 60 km/h.

Surge is a naturally caused by the moon associated with the first full moon of the fall season. Southerners call this a Hunter’s (full) Moon. Inuit well versed Traditional Knowledge (TK) not IQ know this as “pitungnirtuq”. A excellent time to go clam and mussel picking.

Southerners call this a supermoon, and in this case it coincides with the harvest moon, so it is both.
