Federal government gives board chairs a pay raise

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The chairs of several Nunavut boards are getting a pay hike ranging from $50 to $225 a day.

The heads of the Nunavut water board, the wildlife management board, the surface rights tribunal, the arbitration board, the impact review board and the Nunavut planning commission will see an increase in the amount of money they’re paid for each day of work.

Robert Nault, the minister of Indian and northern affairs, announced the new pay rates this week. Nault is responsible for appointing people as chairs to the various boards.

In a Jan. 7 press release, Nault said he met with several territorial boards and commissions to hear their views on hours of work and rates of pay. “My aim is to attract and retain the most qualified individuals. A fair rate of pay will help ensure this goal is met,” Nault said.

Thomas Kudloo, chair of the Nunavut Water Board, will be paid $500 for each day he works, up from $275 per day.

Ben Kovic, the Wildlife Management Board chair, will see an increase of $50, from $275 per day to $325 per day.

Elizabeth Copland, chair of the Nunavut Impact Review Board, will now get $500 per day, up from $275 per day.

Bob Lyle, who heads the Nunavut Planning Commission, is getting $325 a day, up from $275.

The chair of the Surface Rights Tribunal is going from $275 per day to $425 per day, while the Nunavut Arbitration Board chair will get a $50 pay hike, from $500 to $550 per day.

People who sit as members on these boards will also see an increase in their rates of pay.
