A frozen water line at Iqaluit’s Aquatic Centre is to blame for the closure of the facility that on Wednesday entered its third day.

City spokesperson Geoff Byrne described the issue Tuesday afternoon in an email to Nunatsiaq News.

The City of Iqaluit first announced the closure Monday morning, describing the problem as “unexpected,” but offering little additional information.

“Staff have been working to assess and address the issue and will continue repairs,” said a public service announcement from the city.

It’s unclear if the freezing caused damage to the facility’s water line or whether the pool itself has been affected.

Instead of giving a timeline for repairs, the city has been providing daily updates on the facility’s status. Wednesday’s public service announcement said to check back Thursday at 11 a.m. for an update.

Iqaluit’s $40-million Aquatic Centre opened in January 2017.
