Nunavut homeowners can apply for a $1,000 rebate to help cover their heating costs next year, the Government of Nunavut announced Tuesday.
The non-taxable, lump-sum payment is offered through the Nunavut Homeowner Fuel Rebate program.
The program was launched in 2023 “to help Nunavut homeowners with higher costs of heating their homes due to inflation and federal carbon tax increases,” said Finance Minister Lorne Kusugak in a news release from the Department of Finance.
In the release, the department also said homeowners can still apply for the current 2023 rebate until Dec. 31, if they haven’t received it already.
Information on how to apply for the fuel rebate is on the Department of Finance’s website, by email at homefuelrebate@gov.nu.ca or toll-free at 1-800-316-3324.
I wish us Home owners in Northern (Churchill) Manitoba that work for government of Nunavut count us in too. Just saying. Cost of living in Churchill is high as Kivalliq Region.
Whatever! As an inuk home owner too in Manitoba working for government of Nunavut! LIKE I said!!!!! JUST SAYING! I know for damn sure, we wouldn’t get any help.
I’ll take the money, but I still think this isn’t right – it shouldn’t be based on home ownership, but rather whether you pay your own home heating fuel bills. Are they sure there are no people who rent but pay their own fuel bills? If I were one of those people I would be angry.
I have never heard of a renter having to pay their own fuel bills as Uqsuq bills the property owner directly. However if this is the case they should be eligible for the program.
Renters do pay their own fuel – I’m one of them who is billed directly, but even if the homeowner is billed directly, the cost of fuel is accounted for in the rent.
Bad idea. Opens up on bragging rights.
“Nunavut homeowners can apply”
This would be less frustrating if you didn’t have to pay $850,000 for a $400,000 house.
Perhaps the news story topic should be about when to replace your double walled fuel tank, not about rebates.
From the story picture, the depicted tank has spots of rust – all on the lower half- and the ground beneath the tank is free of snow, and the snow free area is not under the fill pipe. This strongly suggests diesel is spilled on the ground right underneath the tank.
At the very least, if someone knows where this tank is, it should be reported to GN DOE for inspection.
Step 1. in saving fuel costs – keep the fuel in your tank to be burned in your boiler.
Funding is available frim NHC for homeowners for fuel tanks
