A heating fuel system failure was the cause of a fuel spill at the Arviat airport’s terminal building last week, according to a Government of Nunavut spokesperson.
The GN reported the spill in a news release May 16, saying the airport remained open at full service though Calm Air was temporarily using its cargo facility to operate its flights.
“The fuel appears to have been almost entirely contained within the fuel tank secondary containment,” said Weichien Chan, a spokesperson for the Department of Economic Development and Transportation, Wednesday in an email to Nunatsiaq News.
“An environmental technician is being sent to the site to identify any remaining areas of concern” and recommend whether further remediation is needed, she said.
Secondary containment is a precautionary measure built into systems to prevent fuel spills or leaks from spreading.
Chan said the fuel, and any water and ice that were inside the secondary containment, was cleaned up by May 16. Work continued through the weekend to remove the contaminated materials for storage until they can be safely taken away.
A new temporary fuel tank was installed and arrangements are being made to install a permanent replacement tank, Chan said.
