The continuing care centre in Gjoa Haven is temporarily closed to visitors after recent confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the centre.
The closure is a precautionary measure to limit the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable residents, particularly elders, the Department of Health said in a public health advisory issued Saturday.
A spokesperson for the department did not respond Monday to Nunatsiaq News’ requests to know how many confirmed cases there are in Gjoa Haven.
The advisory said elders are particularly vulnerable to severe illness from COVID-19 and that additional precautions have been put in place at the continuing care centre.
These include enhanced cleaning, isolation measures, and close monitoring of patients by medical staff.
The continuing care centre is closed to all public visitors until further notice.
The advisory said exceptions may be made for people providing essential support, including end-of-life care or other critical needs, and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. People should call ahead before attempting to enter the building.
Essential health services remain available at the Gjoa Haven community health centre, the advisory said.
For emergencies, people should call 867-360-7441. Those seeking appointments or advice for non-emergency medical concerns are asked to phone the health centre before arriving.
The department is also urging community members to continue following public health measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19.
Recommendations include wearing a well-fitting mask in indoor public spaces, washing hands frequently, staying home when experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms, and ensuring vaccinations and booster shots are up to date.
Updates will be provided through local radio and community social media channels as the situation develops, the advisory said.
Clarification: This story has been updated to clarify that the continuing care centre is closed because of COVID-19 cases within the facility.

For those travelling on medical downsouth, surgeries, and doctors appointments should have to be a week prior to have to be in the city. Most cases 2 or 1 day prior to surgery or being seen is just too low.

A relative an Uncle in poor health before covid died on a large isolation ward where there was only 1 other patient to be seen, on the distant side, this at the height of the Covid19 pandemic. His spouse was informed after a brief visit that she would not be seeing him again and that she should have said her goodbyes – this after leaving the hospital ward! Needless to say she was extremely upset. There was something strange happening then. I believe we won’t be fooled again. As we live in the aftermath things have changed for the worst. People do no go out in public nearly as much, the social fabric is worn as we live apart from one another far more. The use of hard drugs has increased exponentially,. The mention of covid sets alarm bells ringing as it should.
Covid is real, I know of three of my relatives that passed from covid from being perfectly healthy to being sick and isolated! Covid is real, I had it to the point I thought I was going to die, this was before the vaccine. I was an essential worker but meaning I had to go to work and risk getting covid. I was isolated for 10 days. It was unbearable and I didn’t want to go through what I went through and I know I wasn’t the only one. All the people that think that covid is not real, it is, it affects vulnerable members, especially the elderly, children and people with weak immune system.
