Gjoa Haven elected a new hamlet council Monday, weeks after municipal elections were held across most of the rest of Nunavut.

The council vote, originally scheduled to be held Oct. 23, was postponed due to the death of a candidate shortly before election day.

Gjoa Haven’s new eight-member council is composed of Samuel Takkiruq, who received 129 votes; Andrew Porter, 120 votes; Christine Porter, 114 votes; Peter Akkikungnaq, 105 votes; Stephanie Aaluk, 102 votes; Susan Hillier, 100 votes; Paul Puqiqnak, 98 votes; and Miriam Aglukkaq, 97 votes, according to the Elections Nunavut website.

The ninth-place finisher was Kelly Putuguq with 93 votes.

Fifteen candidates ran to be elected to the eight-member council. A total of 1,320 votes were cast for the council race.

Hamlet residents elected Raymond Quqshuun Sr. as mayor and their local district education authority on Oct. 23.
