On the National Day Against Gun Violence, the Nunavut government is reminding people about responsible firearm use.

“By working together, we can help ensure residents feel safe and supported,” the public service announcement, released Friday, said.

It urges gun owners to check their possession and acquisition licence cards to make sure they are up to date, and if needed, go through a firearm safety course.

This comes two days after Nunavut RCMP announced they had charged two Iqaluit men with gun-related offences, including possession while not being the holder of a licence.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also vowed to deliver “decisive action” against gun violence to “get guns off our streets.”

The government plans to make it harder for repeat offenders to get bail and to move forward to “revoke firearms licences for those convicted of intimate partner violence and those subject to protection orders,” Carney’s statement, also released in observance of the National Day Against Gun Violence, said.

Nunavut has the highest rate of firearm-related violent crime in the country, at 312 incidents per 100,000 people, followed by Northwest Territories with 171 incidents, according to a 2023 Statistics Canada study.

We do not need police sporting revolvers as well. Have police keep them at the ready, secure in a vehicle. To obtain one for our personal use it is nearly impossible and only getting harder. Do more to Stop the illegal revolvers at the border.

Yup, another government conspiracy to prevent senseless killings and violence to victims. Take a serious look at the restricted weapons list. If you need one of those for hunting and substance your aim must be really off. If you own one of these, unless your in one of the exceptions then another misnomen you are not law abiding.
