The Government of Nunavut is advising people of the increasing sophistication of online scams and what can be done to protect against them.
“Online and telephone scammers are using more sophisticated scam tactics to intimidate individuals into sharing personal information,” said Kathryn Devereaux, spokesperson for the Department of Community Services, in a public service announcement June 10.
There are, however, actions that can be taken to prevent or combat scamming.
- Always verify the identity of the seller and refrain from responding to suspicious communications, such as unsolicited calls, messages, and emails;
- Use two-factor authentication when logging into banking or email;
- Change your passwords frequently to avoid data leaks.
Anyone who believes they have been the target of an online scam should report it to the Better Business Bureau, which has a scam tracker tool on its website.
Nunavummiut seeking more information should contact Consumer Affairs at the GN, the announcement said.

How would we even contact or get informations about department of community services. In Arviat, can’t even get some help in different government department, they just say we don’t know and just give each to different department. Can you say who is the community services in arviat. And those who say are professionals and who say in control are not even helping. Even John Main is not helping inuit and he is minister of health.
