Green schools lead the way in Iqaluit

Aqsarniit School is about to become the second “Earth School” in Iqaluit.

The Iqaluit middle school will get its formal recognition from the national SEEDS Foundation for having completed 1,000 environmental projects over the past four years. Projects range from poster displays to recycling and picking up garbage.

There are now about 230 Earth Schools across Canada, but Iqaluit has a proud history with the program: Joamie School became the country’s very first Earth School in 1994.

Joamie’s principal, David Serkoak, told the Iqaluit District Education Authority on Monday that his school is now working towards becoming the first Cultural School in Nunavut, by completing 1,000 cultural projects over the next two years.

The IDEA was impressed with that goal, and suggested some kind of formal recognition be created when it’s achieved.
