The personal information of employees and members of the Makivvik Corporation, including banking information and social insurance numbers, were likely obtained by hackers in early February.
An investigation into the incident on Feb. 8 determined an unauthorized person or persons accessed the organization’s servers between Feb. 5 and Feb. 8, the organization announced May 6 in a news release.
“During that time period, the unauthorized actor accessed and copied personal information in Makivvik’s possession,” the release said.
While the information accessed varies from person to person, in general, the hackers had access to full names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, birthdates, social insurance numbers and banking information.
“We have no information or reason to believe that your data was targeted specifically, nor that the information is actually being misused in any way,” the release said.
Makivvik said it has hired external experts to investigate the incident.
It has also reported the cyber security breach to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.
Makivvik advised members and employees to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft or fraud by reviewing credit card and account statements. Anyone who discovers suspicious activity should contact their financial institution.
Nunatsiaq News reached out to Makivvik Corp. on Friday to ask if there have been any updates on the situation, but did not receive an answer by press time.
