Halloween going ahead Wednesday in Iqaluit as city cleans up after wintry blast
City asks people to keep vehicles off the street to help with snow-removal operations
Get those costumes ready, Halloween is back on.
The City of Iqaluit announced midday Wednesday that trick or treating will go ahead tonight as planned, after the annual event was postponed Tuesday due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, the city is asking residents to move their vehicles off the road to help with snow removal as blizzard-like conditions ease.
Abandoned vehicles that impede traffic during snow-clearing operations can be impounded and the owner can be subjected to a fine, said a city public service announcement issued Wednesday.
Main roads have been sufficiently cleared for public use but some secondary roads may still be inaccessible, the city said.
Water delivery, waste management and garbage removal services were restored at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Also, Government of Nunavut offices reopened at 1 p.m. after being closed during the morning due to the weather, the GN announced.
The city had issued a statement at 6:30 a.m. to say municipal services were suspended due to the weather forecast.
Iqaluit was in store for two to four centimetres of snow on Wednesday, with a low temperature of -4 C at night, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The wind chill is expected to make it feel like – 10 C due to winds gusting up to 50 km/h during the day but dropping to 40 km/h on Wednesday night.
Updates on the status of municipal services are available by phoning the city’s “blizzard line” at 867-979-5300.
The GN provides updated information at 867-975-6444.

I’m glad our community is done, very tiring driving around.
Lol I bet the CAO is laughing away after spending time in arviat lmao
On one hand, keep your vehicles off the street.
On the other hand, Halloween goes on.
What is wrong with this picture?
Who makes the decisions in Iqaluit?
Sad, so very sad
It was a good decision. Halloween went off without a hitch last night.
Would you rather have had the kids out during bad weather?
Back then we went to school during blizzards now this modern day you guys are scared to go down the streets
Boohoo, did this and did that, so kids today have to go through what I went through.
Old head thinking
No Mars, I absolutely would not want them out in bad weather.
What I was suggesting was on the one hand they didn’t want vehicles on the road so they could clean up.
Unless things have changed in Iqaluit and as I remember, on Halloween there were hundreds of vehicles on the road with their kids on Halloween.
You DO SEE the conflict here, do you not.
It’s almost like the city reopened at lunch after the roads were adequately cleared and it was safe to be out again.
What’s wrong with that picture is that people think they need to drive their kids around for Halloween.
