Health workshop promotes knowledge of Inuit practices
The National Aboriginal Health Organization was in Iqaluit this week holding a public consultation and regional workshop.
NAHO is a knowledge-based organization, devoted to the protection and validation of traditional knowledge. NAHO board member Mary Wilman explained the meeting was to gather information relating to health from Inuit, have them identify the concerns and issues they are facing and to highlight the best practices in communities. NAHO is trying to have these practices recognized so they can be used in the health system and shared with others.
Three representatives from 13 Baffin communities participated in discussions on subjects such as traditional healing practices.
Similar workshops have been conducted with Inuit in Nunavik, Labrador Innu and Inuvialuit in the Northwest Territories.
