Iqalummiut will ring in 2024 with fireworks after all.
The midnight fireworks display will proceed as planned, despite the postponement of the 6 p.m. show due to high winds.
“Wind conditions have improved. The midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks will happen as scheduled,” a City of Iqaluit statement issued by spokesperson Kent Driscoll at 10:15 p.m., said.
The midnight display is set to launch from the breakwater area.
High winds that exceeded the safety guidelines had forced the city to call off its 6 p.m. display earlier on Sunday afternoon. Later, the city said it had rescheduled that show to the same time on Monday — New Year’s Day.
It will be held at Imiqtarviminiq Lake, along the Road to Nowhere near the Masjid mosque, the same location that Sunday’s 6 p.m. display was to take place.
