Hunters rescued in Hall Beach
Three Hall Beach hunters were rescued from an ice floe after being stranded for three days.
The men left town on June 9 in an aluminum canoe to hunt walrus near the flow edge, about six miles south of the community.
But trouble with their 60-horsepower motor left the men stranded. They were reported missing by June 10.
Hall Beach’s search and rescue committee swept surrounding waters, with assistance from Canadian Helicopters and Canadian military, which dispatched Hercules aircraft from Trenton, Ontario.
The hunters were found on an ice floe about 27 miles southeast of Hall Beach on June 11, early in the morning. But high winds and rough water delayed their rescue for another day.
During that time, the Canadian military dropped warm clothes, food and water from a Hercules.
The hunters arrived back safely on June 12. Police reported the men needed no medical attention, just plenty of sleep.
