Hunters turn to the Canadian Constitution
Three Taloyoak men charged with hunting narwhals and possessing at least one tusk contrary to the federal marine mammal regulations act have launched an appeal, stating the charges violate their constitutional rights.
Saul Piallaq Kooktook, 39, Kokiak Peetooloot, 35, and David Tucktoo, 67, each face one count of hunting narwhals without a licence, once count of possessing a tusk and one count of failing to have the required tags on Sept. 5, 2001.
Their lawyer, Scott Barron, said his clients would be launching a constitutional appeal to the charges on May 6.
The next scheduled court date is June 3.
