People in Iqaluit and Pangnirtung might notice military activity in the area, as the Canadian Armed Forces begins Operation Nanook-Qimaavivut.

The Canadian military, alongside German Armed Forces members, are training on airfield assessment and reconnaissance activities until Sept. 1, the Canadian Armed Forces announced Thursday in a news release.

“The activity will focus on evaluating aviation infrastructure and operating conditions in northern environments for future Canadian and Allied operations,” the release said.

These activities started Wednesday in Pangnirtung and Friday in Iqaluit.

People might see Canadian or German military personnel at airport facilities in the area. They might have firearms — solely for wildlife protection, the release said.

There is no disruption to essential services expected, with minimal impact to the public.
