Three people were charged with impaired driving and several others were handed licence suspensions earlier this month when RCMP and Iqaluit municipal officers stepped up traffic enforcement efforts.

The three-day program carried out from April 5 to April 7 was aimed at nabbing drivers who were either impaired or spotted driving in a dangerous or reckless manner, according to RCMP in an April 12 news release.

In Nunavut, it’s illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol concentration of more than .05 milligrams. Seven drivers whose breath samples registered between .05 and .08 milligrams were handed 24-hour licence suspensions.

Another driver whose sample was in that range lost their licence for 30 days, due to having a previous licence suspension.

Three other drivers were charged with impaired driving under the criminal code of Canada and had their vehicles impounded, police said.

Three others also received 24-hour suspensions — one for being impaired by drugs, one for drug and alcohol impairment, and another for driving while fatigued, police said.

Well they posted all over social media that they were doing a blitz that weekend and should expect a heightened level of enforcement. Anyone that still decided to drive drunk after all the warnings is a special kind of silly.

Too many dum dums on the road in Iqaluit. Either they don’t know how to drive or they drive recklessly and impaired. Either way at least half of the drivers in this town need to get their licenses revoked.

The small isolated Nunavik community where we live, the police either allow the drunk men and women walk home or the police will be a taxi service and drive the drunk men or women to their homes. Forget about the local police to lay criminal charges against the drunks who drink and drive because it is to time consuming to make their written reports. Its much easier to take them home.
