Iqaluit: What should this street be named?

The City of Iqaluit is inviting residents to vote to choose a name for this new street which connects the Road to Apex to Aqqusariaq, the Nunavut Recovery Centre, under construction in the background. There are two options to choose from: Sagiatook Road, in honour of elder Nash Sagiatook, who named the recovery centre; and Sukaliareaq, which means “The way to Suka.” People can vote online at plan.iqaluit.ca/road. The city is also consulting elders before a name is chosen. (Photo by Jeff Pelletier)

When was the naming of buildings started with names and not words? When Elders are consulted this could be a clarification point or approval.

Why do we need to pay for a street sign for what is effectively just a driveway?

This will be a street so this way the City will have to look after cleaning and maintaining the road. More than likely it will be paved too.

City will pave that in 20 years? right after they pave the back road going to the pool which is a city facility. or even the road by curling rink/old arena which is also city properties. Nevermind the whole plateau subdivision and the brown row in front of the fire station which are still on gravel.

Maybe “The Road is Long” in honour of that song that was in that 90s addiction commercial. Who remembers that? 🙂
