Eeleeta Pumiotook of Iqaluit has been charged with aggravated assault, following a domestic assault complaint alleged to have occurred in the 300s area of Iqaluit on the night of Jan. 3, the RCMP said in a news release.

Pumiotook, 46, whose first name is spelled “Eeleeta” in the RCMP news release, was arrested at the scene, the RCMP said.

The victim was taken to the Qikiqtani General Hospital with deep cuts and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP did not state the name or age of the victim, but say he was released from hospital after his injuries were treated.

The RCMP’s Forensic Identification Services executed a search warrant at the home and seized evidence from the scene to support the charge.

Alcohol use by both the accused and the victim is believed to be a factor in the assault, say the RCMP.

Pumiotook was released from custody following a show-cause hearing, and will appear at the Nunavut Court of Justice on Jan. 20 in Iqaluit.

the Iqaluit RCMP remind residents to contact police at (867) 979-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they see a crime happening or to provide information about a crime.
