The Kativik Regional Government is spreading a simple, powerful message to victims of domestic assault: it’s not your fault and you are not alone.

A striking one-minute video was produced by the legal department and the Sapummijiit Crime Victims Assistance Centre to mark its 15th anniversary.

An audio version of the campaign, narrated by spokesperson and Quaqtaq-born singer-songwriter Beatrice Deer, aired on local radio stations on Sept. 23.

The video launched on social media on Monday, Sept. 30.

“This video was made about a victim: this is the kind of thing we deal with,” Ida Naoumealuk, a victim support worker with Sapummijiit, told KRG council members at meetings earlier this month in Kuujjuaq.

“It is a dramatization but it is based on truth.”

Both Naoumealuk and support worker Sarah Ekomiak spoke to council about the clients they work with and the challenges they face.

They hope to raise awareness of violence against women to encourage people, even the family members of abusers, to support these women.

Naoumealuk and Ekomiak added that the video could be shown elsewhere to tell people living through conjugal violence that they are not alone.

The video will eventually be shown outside the region on larger networks such as APTN and CBC.

“We agree about this video, we agree with Sapummijiit,” said KRG chairperson Jennifer Munick.

“We are behind you, we support you.”

More information on Sapummijiit, its work and contact information for its agents can be found here and the video can be viewed here.

    Please don’t show my email!!!
    thank you!

Growing up with only brothers and being the youngest one, I always see there is nothing for men.
My loving brothers ended up being the bad guys from women who have jealousy problem and they come from strong, liars, respected family from the community. Men from “respected”, “spoiled family” start showing your girls that in the real world, tv’shows are not realities!! That in some way of thinking might lower false accusations.

We know too much now that a lot of young girls know how to get away from a stupid lie. If you want women power, end this none sense women power thing, get and find wisdom. I am a women, far from giving my power; to lazy, me, me, me, what about me, to someone who wants all the sympathy. Too many men are locked up behind doors, Nunavik, Nunavut should start having tv shows, where people can relate to. Choose topics that can help people, with little things, realistic realities example; what happens when you lie, what happens when you act out of jealousy, what happens when you realize your dream.
This might be more useful tool to all the none sense travel expenses.
