Members of Ottawa’s culinary and Inuit communities are coming together to hold a vigil for Joshua Qiyuk, a 22-year-old who died last week, a victim of a stabbing.

The vigil is scheduled to happen at Ottawa’s Hemlock Park on Meadow Park Place on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Qiyuk, originally from Baker Lake, was a cook at Absinthe restaurant in Ottawa’s Hintonburg area. He is remembered by his colleagues and friends as a kind, dependable person who went out of his way to help others.

“This vigil is a way for family, friends, colleagues and anyone else touched by Joshua’s spark to come together and celebrate Josh’s life and light,” said organizer Trudy Metcalfe-Coe in a social media post announcing details for the vigil.

There are plans to livestream the event, said Metcalfe-Coe. She said the livestream will be broadcast from her Facebook page.

Ottawa police are investigating the death of Qiyuk, whose body was discovered Oct. 22 on Meadow Park Place. As of Tuesday, police said there were no updates to share.
