A Kimmirut man was released without charges after having what RCMP describe as a “mental health issue” that led police to issue a shelter-in-place alert to residents last week.

Kimmirut RCMP were alerted at around 2:45 a.m. Friday about a man threatening to use a firearm, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie said in an email Monday.

The RCMP issued the shelter-in-place alert “as a safety precaution” and officers located the man an hour later.

RCMP concluded the man had not been making threats and apprehended him under the Mental Health Act.

He was later seen by a medical practitioner and released without charges, Henrie said.
