A Kinngait man was saved after jumping into the water near the community, Nunavut RCMP said in a news release issued today.

On the evening of Tuesday, June 30, the RCMP received a report about “an intoxicated and distressed man” who had “deliberately jumped into the frigid waters near the community,” a news release said.

“Police immediately attended and made contact with the man who appeared to be in crisis and needing help,” the release said.

The man’s identity has not been released.

With the support of the Kinngait fire department, the police were able to de-escalate the situation and successfully brought the man back to shore.

The man was transported to the health centre and “treated for hypothermia and his mental health crisis,” the release said.

The police thanked the fire department for playing a critical role in resolving the situation.

“The situation could have easily turned tragic if it weren’t for the quick actions and training of first responders,” Cpl. Jamie Savikataaq said in the release.

The Nunavut RCMP also reminded residents that help is available through the Kamatsiaqtut Help Line at 1-800-265-3333, or by visiting their website at http://nunavuthelpline.ca/
