The Kivalliq Inuit Association will hold elections on April 12 for its vice-president and community directors for Rankin Inlet, Naujaat and Whale Cove.

The association had earlier postponed its elections Nov. 9, two days before the announcement that there was a positive COVID-19 case in Rankin Inlet.

The move to postpone the elections, which would have taken place Dec. 14, came after the KIA revised its bylaws governing elections.

This gave KIA authority to postpone the elections as well as allowed more Inuit from the Kivalliq to vote. Previously, voters were required to be “usually resident” in the Kivalliq for a period of one year prior to an election.

The changes mean students away at school, people in long-term care in Winnipeg and those working in other regions can vote.

On Monday, the KIA announced an unofficial roster of candidates for the election, which will be confirmed Thursday.

If accepted, the two directors’ positions for Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove will be elected by acclamation.

The KIA said nomination forms had been accepted for the following candidates:

Vice-president:

• Donna Adams
• Barnie Aggark
• Harry Aggark
• David Kuksuk
• Airo Pameolik
• Tom Sammurtok

Director for Naujaat:

• Helena Malliki
• Steve Mapsalak
• John Ell Tinashlu

Director for Rankin Inlet:

• Hamish Tatty

Director for Whale Cove:

• Guy Enuapik

Last week, KIA president Kono Tattuinee announced the association’s newly appointed members to various land claims bodies:

Nunavut Wildlife Management Board: Philip Putumiraqtuq — Baker Lake

Nunavut Water Board: David Oolooyuk: — Rankin Inlet
