Kuujjuaq man honoured for work with char
Thanks to Allen Gordon, 92,000 more baby fish will be released this June into the rivers around Kuujjuaq
Allen Gordon of Kuujjuaq received a national award in Ottawa last week, for his work with Arctic char.
Gordon received one of four national awards for responsible fishing for his work and innovations in Arctic char habitat enhancement.
In collaboration with Kuujjuaq’s Nayumavik Landholding Corporation, Gordon has been involved with a project to seed nearby lakes and rivers with Arctic Char.
Gordon spearheaded the conversion of an abandoned water plant in Kuujjuaq into a hatchery that can produce 100,000 char per year.
“The recipients of the awards are very deserving of this honour,” said Robert G. Thibault, the federal minister of fisheries and oceans. “Their commitment to the development of sustainable fishing methods and their promotion of sustainable fishing practices is vital to the conservation of the resource.”
The awards are presented annually in recognition of the outstanding contribution by Canadian commercial fishermen to the development of responsible fishing practices.
