On April 1, 1999, the territory of Nunavut was established.

On Nunavut’s 20th anniversary, here’s what leaders had to say to mark the occasion:

“Twenty years ago today, the landscape of Canada changed forever, thanks to the resiliency, the ingenuity and the resolve of Nunavut Inuit,” said Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been two decades since the creation of our territory. Twenty years since the realization of a powerful vision, the excitement and possibility, and the almost physical feeling of hope.

“The reality of progress in Nunavut has not always been as swift as we’d hoped. But we have seen success, growth and tenacity, and have learned so much since 1999. We have come so far from where we started. We are growing–in our capacities, from lessons learned, in our partnerships and from each other.”

“Today, I hope you take the time to reflect on our successes–in the inspiration of our entrepreneurs, artists and musicians, in the passion of our Elders and advocates in Inuit language, culture and values, and in our communities where we foster support, understanding and accomplishments. This is our Nunavut. We are proud, and we are committed to realizing our potential and our goals.”

“Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nunavut and the unique heritage of the people who call it home,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“The North is at the heart of our identity as Canadians, and we know that Nunavut will continue to play a key role in our country’s future. Happy Birthday, Nunavut!”

“Covering over one fifth of Canada’s land mass, the creation of the most northerly territory of the country fulfilled a long-standing desire for Inuit in the eastern Arctic for greater control over their land and their future,” said Northern Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc.

“By investing in the North and its people we can support Nunavummiut in capitalizing on opportunities and enhancing the quality of life in the vast northern landscape.

“As Canada’s 25th Governor General, my father had the honour of issuing the royal proclamation that created Nunavut in 1999. I remember him telling me how proud he was to have been a part of that historic occasion.

“Today, on this important anniversary, we celebrate the invaluable contribution that Nunavummiut have made to the social, cultural and economic development of our country and look forward to the promise of a bright future ahead.”

For the rest of us, as they say in French, “plus ca change, plus ca reste la meme choise”. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
