A Montreal man is charged with drug and alcohol-related offences after his luggage was searched at the Iqaluit airport last week.

RCMP announced Monday in a news release that during a layover of a flight en route to Clyde River police seized one ounce of cocaine and 33 60-ounce bottles of vodka.

Iakov Verdibekov, 45, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and unlawful sale of liquor.

Officers from the RCMP’s Northwest Region federal Arctic unit made the arrest with the assistance of Nunavut RCMP.

Verdibekov appeared in an Iqaluit courtroom on Feb. 6.

He was scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, according to the Nunavut Court of Justice docket.
