A 36-year-old man faces charges after a fatal police-involved shooting in Inukjuak on Dec. 20.

Nunavik Police Service officers responded to a 911 call at 3:30 a.m. that day after a report that a person at a home posed a danger to others, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said in a news release published on its website Dec. 21.

When police arrived, a man armed with a rifle confronted them, the release said, and gunfire was exchanged.

Andrew Naluktuk and his daughter, six-year-old Alacie Iqaluk, were shot and later medevaced to a Montreal hospital.

Iqaluk died days later.

Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force, charged Naluktuk on Dec. 21 with two counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Nunavik police laid additional charges on Dec. 23.

Naluktuk faces one count each of assault on peace officers with a weapon; assault; unlawfully causing bodily harm to a person; pointing a firearm at police; and discharging a firearm to prevent arrest.

Quebec’s police watchdog, Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, is investigating the actions of the police officers during the altercation. The bureau investigates any circumstance when a person is injured or dies after an interaction with police.

Sixteen people have died in Nunavik in interactions with police since 2016. Four of these incidents have occurred in the past 14 months.

Joshua Papigatuk died in November 2024 and his twin brother Garnet was badly injured after they were shot by police in Salluit.

In May, Mark R. Annanack died in Kangiqsualujjuaq after a confrontation with police. And in July, James Kavik in Inukjuak died after an incident involving police.

Naluktuk is set to appear in court on Jan. 23.
